Introduced with a Grand Prix-style image posted on Instagram with the caption “The races begin!”, Louis Vuitton’s 2017 Cruise collection, designed by Nicolas Ghesquière and presented in Rio de Janeiro, is just as thrilling as the motor races that inspired it. Fashion design, sport, and celebrities: the perfect mix for certain success.
Ghesquière’s designs originate in the choice of location – the Niterói Museum of Contemporary Art – with its flying saucer shape and curved access walkway, which for the first time has become the realm of fashion models. They continue with the futurist cut of the pieces, with slits, portholes, asymmetrical elements accentuated by strong colours, and accessories that are once again in pole position to win the title of this season’s must-haves. Flip-flops have been effectively crossed with regular sports footwear to bring to life a new kind of shoe that expresses both comfort and glamour; meanwhile, the buyer’s expert eye is ravished by rubber-soled, generously-heeled ankle boots, inspired by the sport of cycling.
It is sport, yet again, that marks the work of a designer who is always avant-garde, but who also has an eye on trends and wearability. And in the year of the Olympic Games, which will be held in that same Brazil, football-inspired prints and details will indeed adorn a collection which, starting from motor sports (see the unmissable Speedy Bag revisited with a racing pattern), extends to an absolutely irresistible sporting melange, which also mixes materials and finishings.
The entourage of celebrities, along with the iconic models that no Ghesquière runway show would be without, ultimately made both show and after party an exclusive melting pot. Alicia Vikander, Alessandra Ambrosio, Zendaya, Catherine Deneuve, Chiara Ferragni and Jaden Smith, all present in perfect Vuitton style, for an event that will be remembered. Beyond fashion.
