Transformed
How Everyday Things Are Made

Author: Bill Slavin

Publisher: Kids Can Press

Product: Book

Cost: $24.95

Dental floss, salt, whistles, and running shoes. Bill Slavin wondered about these common items so he turned his curiosity into Transformed. Slavin takes a close look at 69 everyday things and tells us how they’re made. We learn the stories of everything from aluminum foil to matches to yogurt. The book is divided into five categories: Fun and Games, Around the House, Soup to Nuts, Cover-up (clothes), and Back to Basics (the materials other things are made of).

When I looked at the cover, this book didn’t look very interesting. But I read the introduction and it convinced me it would be fabulous. I learned a lot of things, like how shoes, toothpicks, jeans, pencils, teddy bears, and soccer balls are made. My favourite was learning how gum is made. I didn’t like some of the topics. A grown-up might find learning how to make paper interesting, but I didn’t. This was a very interesting book to read, though. I would give it a 9 out of 10.
