Naturally Wild Musicians

Publisher: Annick Press

Product: Book (56 pages)

Cost: $8.95

Ages: 8 to 11

Birds sing and so do frogs, crickets, humpback whales, and many other animals. In Naturally Wild Musicians, author Peter Christie explores how animals use sounds to communicate. You’ll learn why walruses sing for 65 hours at a time and how mole crickets use a megaphone-shaped mud burrow to make their sounds louder. Fun chapter headings such as “Predators: Songs in the Key of Yikes!” and the use of photographs and illustrations make this book sing!

I thought this book looked good. I liked the sections on frogs and especially the coqui frog that makes the neat sound “ko-kee”. I learned why different animals make sounds and also more, such as how a tiny insect can make sounds as loud as a lawn mower. I had fun reading the book to my little sister and with my dad. If the book was a little easier to read, I would have enjoyed it more.

The book has nice pictures of each animal that it talks about. (The mice are really cute!) I give this book a 9 out of 10.
