How are crayons made?
The two main ingredients in crayons are pigment (the colour) and wax. Pigments are made from different chemicals. The dry pigment powder is added to clear, melted wax. Once the pigment is mixed in well, the hot wax is poured into crayon-shaped moulds. After the crayons cool and harden, labels are added, and the crayons are packaged and sent to stores. The real magic begins when you start to draw with those new crayons!
When the first Crayola crayons were made over 100 years ago, there were only eight colours in a package. (The colours of the rainbow, plus brown and black.) Now, there are 120 colours. (Some of the newest colours are “inch worm” and “jazzberry jam”!)
