Googling Earth

Using Google Earth you can explore your neighbourhood from your living room.

What You Need

• Computer with Internet connection (a high-speed connection works best)

What to Do

1. With a parent’s help, visit http://earth.google.com. Download and install the free Google Earth software.

2. Find the KNOW office by typing our address (3960 Quadra St, Victoria, BC) into the search bar in the top left.

3. Use the zoom tool to get a closer look at our office. Can you tell the difference between buildings, parking lots, and cars?

4. Explore some more by clicking and dragging on the picture. This allows you to see different areas.

5. See if you can find Swan Lake, which is southwest of our office. Can you see the trail the staff uses when they run around the lake at lunchtime? Look for the corn maze northeast of our office, too.

6. Type your home address in the search field. Can you find your home? Use the zoom and scroll features and see if you can trace the route you take to school.

7. There are lots of fascinating places to look at around Earth. For example, type Davis Monthan Air Force Base into the search bar. You are now looking at “The Boneyard” where the United States Air Force keeps thousands of old airplanes. Also, try zooming in on these coordinates (type these numbers in the search bar):
46.765669,-100.79274 (semi-trailer truck on its side)
48.825183,2.1985795 (jet fighter in a parking lot)
52.069207,4.3139865 (car parked on the side of a building)

How it Works
Google Earth has “pasted” thousands of satellite photographs together on a virtual globe. Then a very complex computer mapping system was added. The result is a program that lets anyone, anywhere, look closely at any part of our planet.
