Searching for Gold
Head to the kitchen to learn one way geologists search for gold!
What You Need
• Bread knife
• Peanut butter
• Jam
• 4 slices bread
• Edible gold balls used for cake decoration (e.g., carnivalettes)
• 2 large straws
What to Do
1. Do this activity with a partner. Each partner follows steps 2 to 6.
2. Spread peanut butter and jam on one slice of bread.
3. Without showing your partner, create a vein of gold using the gold balls.
4. Spread peanut butter on the second slide of bread and add it to your sandwich.
5. Switch sandwiches with your partner.
6. Use a straw to sample the sandwiches for gold. Drill down in the sandwich by poking the straw through the layers. Look in the hole and the straw for evidence of gold. Who will be the first to strike it rich?
How it Works
Geologists sample rocks to identify them and to look for minerals such as gold. Often they take rocks lying on the Earth’s surface, but they also drill down to gather samples from the Earth’s crust. The straw is like a drill. You used it to sample the Earth’s crust (your sandwich) for gold.
