Picture Writing

Hieroglyphic script was one kind of Egyptian writing. There are over 700 symbols in this alphabet and each was used for a different sound, word, or idea. Some of the hieroglyphs can be translated into the letters we use. Can you write your name using hieroglyphs?
What You Need
Scissors
1 small paper bag
Black felt marker
What to Do
1. Cut a rectangle out of the paper bag.
2. Sound out your name and find the correct symbol in the chart for each sound. For instance, if your name is Charlie, the first sound is Ch. The symbol for Ch is .
3. Write the symbols for your name in a column. When you are done, draw a large oval around your name.
4. Crinkle the paper to make it look older. Hang your sign on your bedroom door.
How it Works
Hieroglyphics can be written in rows or columns. In this activity, you made a cartouche [kar-TOOSH]. Royal names were written in cartouches, which were oval loops. Cartouches were used on tombs, walls, statues, and even doorways. The hieroglyphic alphabet is more complicated than what is shown here.
