Eat Like a Bird
A bird’s beak is like a tool it uses to stab, scoop, pick, or probe for food. Are you ready to try eating like a bird? Find some friends and play this game.
What You Need
• 1 pile each of small “food” items (e.g., candies, cereal, rice, elastic bands, toothpicks, pasta)
• 1 plastic bag per person
• A watch
• A variety of tools (e.g., clothes pin, tongs, spoon, fork, toothpick, skewer)
What to Do
1. Put the food items in small piles in a playing area, such as a table top or other clean surface.
2. Give each player a plastic bag. This is their “stomach”.
3. Give each player a tool. This is their “beak”.
4. Each person has one minute to collect as much food as possible.
5. Compare the types of food that each “bird” gathered. Was it easier to use certain tools to pick up different “food” items?
6. Repeat the game using a different tool.
How it Works
In this game, the player using the fork as a beak would have found it easy to pick up the elastic bands or soft candies, but hard to pick up rice. The player using the spoon as a beak could scoop up rice and almost everything else. In real birds, different beaks are better suited for certain types of food. For example, a heron uses its long, sharp bill to stab fish and a hummingbird uses its long, slender bill to sip nectar from flowers.
