Kirsten Goss was born in South Africa although her worklife began in London. Studying economics, she diversified into a degree in goldsmithing and jewellery design as this “was the strangest thing I could do while still doing something academic”, split between her mathematical mind and creative spirit. As a designer, she has managed to convert this ambivalence into an added value. Having completed her studies, she moved to London and worked in The City for two years, prior to exploring the world of design and working for Erikson Beamon: jewellery indeed, but more commercial and social. Feeling the time was right, in 2002 she launched her brand Kirsten Goss London, and then “headed home” in 2005.
This was the cue for her stores to grow exponentially (London, Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town). One of her rings won the “most beautiful object in South Africa” award in 2012. She has been presented to Queen Elizabeth II of England twice and has become one of the most renowned designers in her homeland. Her most recent store was opened in Cape Town in the V&A Waterfront, close by the Zeitz MOCAA – home to hip and trendy design. The store is highly original, futuristic and sophisticated and features a changing array of exhibitions and innovative lighting schemes – impossible to miss!
Her aesthetic is instantly recognisable, though not bound by fixed definitions: clean, almost Scandinavian lines but with bold use of gemstones and bright colours that are a vivid display of her African roots. Her defining trait is a passion for experimentation in shapes and consistency. Kirsten Goss represents a contemporary, colourful style whose lines call to mind nature yet always and forever convey sheer joy. Her nose for business has allowed her to take her brand far beyond her early dreams.
