The collection and articles featured in this issue are closely connected with biodiversity and environmental sustainability, core values to which Kemon has been committed ever since it began in 1959.
As Oscar Farinetti, owner of Eataly, pointed out during Expo Milan, which was centred on biodiversity, Italy is a country that covers 0.5% of the Earth’s surface and is home to 0.83% of the world’s inhabitants. However, on this 0.5% of surface area there are 7,000 different types of edible plant; the second country in the world is Brazil, with 3,000. We have 58,000 different animal species living around us, followed by China, in second place, with 20,000. Italy has 1,800 native vine varieties; France is second with 200. These are just a few facts from a large collection of data showing that our country has the greatest biodiversity, 70% of all artworks, and the most beautiful landscapes in the world.
This is a unique heritage, of which we should be proud. We should be not daunted by the changes we are faced with due to the need for a new relationship with nature and the new challenges of the world economy, but should aim to transmit these values to the younger generation. Teaching them each day to appreciate our daily beauty.
