Mr. Mancinelli, barbering for over 90 years

From New York to the Guinness Book of Records: 105 years old and no plans to retire

Born in Italy in 1911, Anthony Mancinelli’s family moved to Newburgh, New York when he was eight years old. Mr Mancinelli began to work during the last century at age 12 in the 1920s. At age twenty, he opened his first salon, selling it only in 1987 after 60 years of operation. Since then, he has continued to work at least five days a week. Today, he is the world’s oldest barber and entered the Guinness Book of World Records in 2007 as being “still in business at the age of 101 years, two months and 26 days.”

― “I go along because I like it, that's how it works”

“I go along because I like it, that’s how it works,” explains Anthony. “If you like your job, you keep doing it with joy”. With six brothers and one sister, he spent his first few years of work getting up at four in the morning, delivering newspapers and then going to the salon until 20:00. “Once everyone went to the barber to get a shave. Now it’s less so. No one ever taught me how to cut hair. And if you don’t have the imagination for it, nothing can be done about it. The best part of this job is getting to know people. After all these years, nobody is a stranger to me. We are almost like a family. ”
