Check Out Conductivity

On page 12 of Issue 17 of KNOW (the Gold issue), we mention that gold metal is a good conductor. No, gold doesn't conduct trains or musicians. In science, conductivity means how well a material allows the transfer of heat or electricity.  Try this experiment to learn more about conductivity.

What you need:

a dab of cold butter
a metal teaspoon
a plastic teaspoon
a wooden Popsicle stick
a cup of warm water

What to do

1. Put a small dab of butter on the end of the metal and plastic spoons and the wooden stick.

2. Place the spoons and stick in the water. (The end without the butter goes in first.)

3. Which dab of butter melts first? This material is the best conductor of the three materials.
