Background
KNOW is the “younger sibling” to YES Mag: The Science Magazine for Adventurous Minds (formerly, YES Mag: Canada’s Science Magazine for Kids). KNOW’s first issue was published in Jan/Feb 2006.

YES Mag grew out of a partnership with Actua, an award-winning science promotion organization. Actua is made up of 27 university-based, student-run programs from Victoria to St. John's.

In Fall 2009, YES Mag and KNOW were acquired by the Mad Science Group.

Like Mad Science and Actua, both YES Mag and KNOW seek to encourage interest and appreciation for science in children, provide positive role models for both girls and boys, and inspire children to continue pursuing their interest in science.

Editorial
KNOW is for children ages 6 to 9. We strive to engage our readers in a fun, informative, and interactive way, keeping in mind that children this age have a range of reading abilities and limited science background.

Every issue of KNOW contains short news items, regular departments, a lengthy section related to our theme, short fiction, activities, hands-on projects, interviews and more.

Non-fiction: At this time we are not accepting queries or unsolicited non-fiction articles. If, however, you have experience writing for children, particularly children ages six to nine, you are invited to contact the editor and may also forward some samples of your published work. Note: at this time we are only accepting Canadian writers.

Fiction/Poetry: We are interested in receiving short fiction or poetry (theme-related; see 2011-12 themes below).

If you are submitting your fiction, please keep the following in mind:

  • fiction must be related, even loosely, to the theme. It is desirable, but not imperative, that there be a science “tie-in”. (In other words, don’t force the science connection.) We are looking for lively, engaging, excellent writing.
  • fiction submissions up to 500 words
  • no queries; completed stories/poems only
  • a bibliography is required for all retold folklore/mythology

Illustrators/Cartoonists: KNOW contains illustrations and has an illustrated cover. We assign all artwork but illustrators and cartoonists are welcome to forward samples of your work or an expression of interest with links to a web site. Please do not send original artwork. Be sure that all samples are labelled with your name and contact information.

Other: KNOW will include puzzles, games, brainteasers, math and word activities. We will consider any original ideas.

Rights:
We purchase first time North American print rights and non-exclusive electronic rights to articles. First time North American print rights means we can print your story in the North American print edition of our magazine. Non-exclusive electronic rights means we can use the article in an electronic format that we publish (for example, on our website or in an e-book we produce) but we can not relicense the material to any third party, nor can we include the article in any item that is for sale (for example, a retail CD-ROM containing a selection of articles from the magazine). You retain the copyright on your article and the right to relicense it to third parties.

Sample Copies:
Please take a look at KNOW before submitting. Back issues and subscriptions can be ordered from our online store. We are also available at larger newsstands in Canada and many Canadian libraries also carry us.

Comments:
- Writing about science for young children is very difficult. You must use clear and simple language yet be scientifically accurate. Articles are also very short; every word counts! Please be sure that your work fulfills these criteria before submitting to us.
- Please use quality reference material.
- We use the Chicago Manual of Style and the New Oxford American Dictionary as references.
- Email submissions are acceptable and preferred but please, no phone calls. We will try our best to get back to you in a timely manner. Attachments are fine.
- Please do not use any formatting in your submissions. Submissions should be left-justified and double-spaced.
- All submissions should be clearly marked with your name, address, phone number, and email address.
- If you require any submitted material to be returned, you must include a self-addressed stamped envelope with CANADIAN stamps.
